🤖 Can Synthetic Researchers really replace us?

In the increasingly dynamic and technological world of market research, a new figure is taking hold that is intriguing (and disturbing!): the synthetic researcher. That's right! 🫣

But what exactly is it all about? And what role can it play in qualitative research?

🔍  Who is the Synthetic Researcher? The AI Moderator who challenges traditional qualitative research

In a nutshell, it is a virtual moderator, powered by generative artificial intelligence, designed to conduct one-to-one qualitative interviews via chat with real participants.

These tools, also known as AI interviewers or digital moderators, promise to revolutionize the way qualitative research is conducted, thanks to a number of seemingly unbeatable advantages:

  • Ability to interview hundreds of people at once
  • Data analysis 5 times faster than a human team
  • 24-hour operation, with no time zone limits
  • Elimination of unconscious moderator bias
  • Management of large volumes of data
  • Availability in more than 40 languages

Not only that. The experience is also usually “well packaged”: one can customize the moderator's avatar, set a briefing, define objectives and tone of voice.

But as much as the enthusiasm for new technologies is understandable, are we sure that synthetic researchers can really replace the sensitivity, active listening, and empathy of the human researcher?

⚖️ Human Researcher vs Synthetic Researcher: what are the real limits of AI?

We tested one of the first tools available, and our answer, to date, is no: Synthetic Researchers cannot replace the Human Researcher, especially in qualitative research.

Here are some critical issues we found:

  • No personal experience: the AI does not draw on authentic experiences, either personal or professional
  • Limited cultural intuition: it struggles to grasp implicit references, irony, context
  • Zero real empathy: it does not “feel” emotions, nor does it adapt to the respondent's reactions
  • Difficulty in improvising: it cannot change course or delve into an unexpected topic on the fly, as an experienced moderator would
  • Non-verbal/paraverbal communication is lost: anything that is not clearly verbalized is likely to go unnoticed
  • Does not support real group interactions: despite some communications suggesting that synthetic researchers can moderate hundreds of focus groups at once, in reality we are dealing with Qual at scale tools (we have discussed them here), i.e., systems that prioritize the scalability of the data at the expense of the depth of the responses. In fact, the interaction takes place exclusively in a one-to-one mode, through individual chats, without any confrontation between participants or spontaneous exchange
  • Loss of concentration: without real human interaction, the respondent can easily become distracted, remaining on a superficial level of response

These are all elements that, in qualitative research, make a difference, where it is often in the silence, in the gaze, in the off-track question that the most significant insights are hidden. And it is there that, at least for now, the human presence remains irreplaceable.

🔄  Toward an integration of AI and Human Researchers: hybrid future or utopia?

From our point of view, therefore, the most interesting prospect at this time is not the replacement of the human researcher, but its intelligent integration with AI: a hybridization in which synthetic researchers can become strategic allies, useful at some specific stages of the process (such as screening or large-scale data collection), to amplify our capabilities, not to replace them.

In short, at a time when automation is everywhere, the human factor is still the real competitive advantage. Because really listening, reading between the lines, knowing how to stay in the unspoken… remains, at least for now, a uniquely human art! But perhaps the researcher of the future will be the one who knows how to combine technology and intuition. Who will be able to make the algorithm converse with empathy. Who will live to see! 😉
