In the increasingly dynamic and technological world of market research, a new figure is taking hold that is intriguing (and disturbing!): the synthetic researcher. That's right! 🫣
But what exactly is it all about? And what role can it play in qualitative research?
In a nutshell, it is a virtual moderator, powered by generative artificial intelligence, designed to conduct one-to-one qualitative interviews via chat with real participants.
These tools, also known as AI interviewers or digital moderators, promise to revolutionize the way qualitative research is conducted, thanks to a number of seemingly unbeatable advantages:
Not only that. The experience is also usually “well packaged”: one can customize the moderator's avatar, set a briefing, define objectives and tone of voice.
But as much as the enthusiasm for new technologies is understandable, are we sure that synthetic researchers can really replace the sensitivity, active listening, and empathy of the human researcher?
We tested one of the first tools available, and our answer, to date, is no: Synthetic Researchers cannot replace the Human Researcher, especially in qualitative research.
Here are some critical issues we found:
These are all elements that, in qualitative research, make a difference, where it is often in the silence, in the gaze, in the off-track question that the most significant insights are hidden. And it is there that, at least for now, the human presence remains irreplaceable.
From our point of view, therefore, the most interesting prospect at this time is not the replacement of the human researcher, but its intelligent integration with AI: a hybridization in which synthetic researchers can become strategic allies, useful at some specific stages of the process (such as screening or large-scale data collection), to amplify our capabilities, not to replace them.
In short, at a time when automation is everywhere, the human factor is still the real competitive advantage. Because really listening, reading between the lines, knowing how to stay in the unspoken… remains, at least for now, a uniquely human art! But perhaps the researcher of the future will be the one who knows how to combine technology and intuition. Who will be able to make the algorithm converse with empathy. Who will live to see! 😉
