🧠 The new era of qualitative research: what is really the Qual at Scale?

Qual at scale

In recent years, we have witnessed a profound transformation in research methodologies. But to understand where we have come, let's take a step back.

📌 What Qualitative Research is and why it remains crucial

Qualitative research has always been the preferred approach to exploring the depths of human experience. Let's look at their distinguishing features:

  • they unveil the whys (now called insights!), digging into the underlying meanings and going beyond the simple data or the "stated" of the interviewee
  • they are distinguished by flexibility and adaptability to context. The questions are not rigid: they improvise, they listen, leaving room for empathy and the moderator's interpretive ability
  • They offer valuable time for reflection, both for respondents and analyzers
  • they employ psychological tools such as associative and projective tests to explore unconscious dimensions
  • they make use of the researcher's experience, background and perspective: elements that enrich the very value of the survey

Until 2010, qualitative research was essentially based on three methodological milestones: focus groups, to capture social dynamics and direct confrontation between different perspectives; in-depth interviews, to explore individual perspectives and experiences, with greater intimacy; and ethnographies, to observe authentic behaviors in natural contexts. These approaches could be supported by a robust preliminary desk research phase, but the real added value lay in direct immersion in the field, where the researcher could breathe in the atmosphere, pick up on nonverbal nuances, and contextualize the data collected. Workshops complemented this methodological ecosystem, serving as moments of synthesis where stakeholders, participants and researchers collaborated in exercises of co-creation and collective reflection, turning insights into concrete actions and innovative solutions.

💻 The Impact of Digital on Qualitative Research.

Then from about 2010 onward, an unprecedented methodological evolution took place. The qualitative research landscape has been enriched with innovative tools that have significantly expanded the possibilities of inquiry:

  • Asynchronous online platforms revolutionized the dynamics of individual and group interviews by introducing a dilated time dimension that allowed participants to develop more thoughtful responses. This asynchrony has fostered a reflective depth previously difficult to achieve in traditional contexts
  • In parallel, sophisticated technologies such as eye-tracking have transformed the observation of user-product interaction, making the invisible visible: visual pathways, points of attention, unconscious perceptual hierarchies that have been able to reveal truths that often elude verbalization
  • Netnography has extended the field of ethnographic observation to digital territories, such as forums, social networks, and online communities, allowing researchers to explore spontaneous behaviors in contexts where people express themselves freely, without the awareness of being observed that might alter the authenticity of reactions
  • Sentiment analysis has offered the possibility to systematically analyze huge volumes of textual content on the Web, decoding emotional tones, affective nuances and value orientations that color online verbal expressions

This convergence of methodological innovations has opened up previously unimaginable research scenarios, combining the traditional depth of the qualitative approach with the breadth and scalability typical of quantitative methods. But in this rapidly changing landscape, what are the trends that are really redefining the future of research?

🔍 The Qual at Scale phenomenon: what it is and why it is revolutionizing market research

The term dominating conversations among research professionals on Linkedin and beyond today? Qual at Scale! But what is it all about?

It is an approach that represents an innovative synthesis of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, where the primary objective becomes the collection of deep insights at scale. It is a hybrid paradigm that retains the qualitative essence in the setting and nature of the questions, but adopts quantitative methods for the analysis and interpretation of the results.

This development, however, is not accidental. It responds, in fact, to a concrete need that emerged after years of collective infatuation with big data. The initial enthusiasm for the sheer volume of information available gradually gave way to a more mature awareness: the numbers, impressive as they are, tell only part of the story; trends were emerging clear from the data, but remained orphaned of a why that would make them truly understandable and, above all, actionable.

It is precisely into this space of need that the new Qual at Scale tools have entered: sophisticated platforms capable of processing large-scale open-ended responses, identifying meaningful correlations between different variables, and answering specific questions with a depth that goes beyond the surface of quantitative data. The ambition is to move beyond simply describing the phenomenon (the what) to embracing its understanding (the why).

But in the face of this methodological evolution, we asked ourselves a crucial question: can these new methodologies really be considered qualitative in the traditional sense of the term? Do they retain the essence of depth, flexibility and interpretive sensitivity that has always characterized the qualitative approach, or do they represent a new methodological category with its own distinctive characteristics?

⚖️ Qual at Scale vs. classical Qualitative Research: comparison and limitations

From our point of view, the Qual at Scale represents a new territory with distinctive characteristics of its own. Let's try to see a comparative analysis of its characteristics, with classical qualitative research:

  • Flexibility? Only partially. Artificial intelligence has introduced elements of algorithmic flexibility that allow customizing survey paths based on prior responses. However, this adaptability does not reach that of an experienced moderator, capable of picking up emotional nuances and nonverbal cues, immediately adapting the way questions are formulated or the research flow
  • Time for reflection? Limited. Although some platforms allow room for reflection, speed (the fateful slogan: “insight in 5x”!) remains an imperative of this approach, thus compressing the space for analysis, sometimes sacrificing depth
  • Group interaction? Virtually absent. Gone is that dimension of collective confrontation that in traditional focus groups, through disagreement and mutual contamination of different perspectives, generated invaluable insights
  • Associative and projective tests? Rarely implemented, and when present, they appear in simplified versions that hardly reach the exploratory depth of traditional tools
  • Human moderation? Replaced by automated systems. The “synthetic moderator,” however sophisticated, lacks the empathy and interpretive sensitivity that characterize a qualitative research team

So, on closer inspection, this would not simply be qualitative research brought to a large scale, but a hybrid approach, a complementary methodology, not a substitute, for traditional qualitative research, offering a broader but certainly less in-depth overview, quicker but less reflective, more systematic but less intuitive overview of the human experience it aims to investigate. That is why, perhaps, we should more correctly call it Quant with a few whys…or something similar! 😊
